The race is run, but the year’s not done

5 Critical year-end moves

The Melbourne Cup’s fashion and festivities are behind us, but before we dive into the seasonal juggle of end-of-year deadlines and family commitments, let’s focus on positioning you for success.

Turn these final weeks into your winning streak…

While others are winding down, here are 5 strategic moves to ensure you’re setting yourself up for a powerful 2025:

1. Master your value conversation if you’re waiting for the ‘perfect time’ to negotiate your worth – STOP. Here’s the truth – any time is a good time to put your worth on the agenda. By getting in early to advocate for your worth, you’ll be ahead of the pack who notoriously come back from holiday and want to ‘have the conversation’. Do it today, so you can have a truly relaxing break.

2. Define your 2025 terms whether it’s flexible working arrangements, project leadership, less expectations, more budget, or any number of other things you have longed for in 2024 – now’s the time to shape next year’s boundaries and conditions. Remember: you’re negotiating your future, not asking for favours.

3. Clear the financial decks by closing out your budget – chase any outstanding payments, process any owing invoices and reconcile where things are for you today. Prioritise these discussions now, while decision-makers are still at their desks, instead of having to negotiate this during the mad dash into year-end.

4. Secure your seat at the table by booking key stakeholder meetings before calendars fill up – this is a great time to check on how your circle of influence view the end of the year and drop in 2025 collaborative planning sessions. BTW – As our brains love the positivity and hope that each new year brings, these discussions are more likely go ahead, rather than get bounced.

5. Design your Q1 impact strategy by mapping out your first-quarter moves now. Studies show people who plan their Q1 strategy before the break are 40% more likely to achieve their goals. Start by identifying the 5 things you want to achieve, what are your non-negotiables, where are prepared to flex, what do you need and who is best placed to support your success?

Get your 2025 gameplan locked and loaded, so you can hit the ground running while everyone else is recovering from their holiday food coma.

Remember, early birds don’t just get worms – they get more of what they want and deserve.

Got a negotiation on your mind? Don’t wait until January when the moment’s gone.

Whether it’s to:

  • have that overdue discussion about your worth
  • re-set your boundaries so you can have a life as well a business or job
  • reshape your role to match your true capabilities
  • lead ‘that’ project because you know you’re the best person for the job

Or if you’re simply done waiting for ‘the right moment’ to speak up!

Negotiator Strengths Self-Assessment

Step 1 of 10

It’s time to identify where your negotiator strengths lie, and to discover where you should focus your energy to improve your business negotiation capabilities.

This self-assessment is about the negotiator you are today, not the one you want to be, so as you work your way through each statement, sit in it, take your time to reflect on your typical response and give it a true assessment rating. It may be challenging but be honest.

Assessment Scale

Read through each question then think about how much the behaviour or situation sounds like you.

Consider if this sounds: least like you; a bit like you; or like you most of the time – in most situations around and at the deals table.

Take your time, but don’t over think it.

Below each question select how you score it on this scale:

THIS SOUNDS LIKE ME:

1 = Least2 = A Bit3 = Mostly
